Some people are more prone to nightmares than others. I rarely have them, thank goodness, but I've heard of some really bad cases when nightmares happen virtually every night, making the person afraid of going to sleep. Does this happen to anyone? Are there any cures?

What I suggest is not really a cure, but a preventive action to lessen the tendency to have a nightmare and this works for me: avoid a heavy meal before going to bed.
